2 CONT The Rev. Mr. White evidently persuaded Mrs. Gallop and successfullyfurthered
2 CONT her coming.  She and the children arrived on Sep 4 1633 on the Griffin,after
2 CONT an eight weeks' crossing; her husband piloted the ship into Boston Harborthru
2 CONT a new channel he had discovered, the channel running close by Lovell'sIsland,
2 CONT a quarter of a mile east of his Gallop's Island.

2 CONT He was made a freeman in April 1634. He was admitted to First Church,Boston

2 CONT John Gallop was a pioneer in the vitally important coastal trade between
2 CONT Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. " Within a year after hemoved to

2 CONT On Dec 6 1632, Gallop and his vessel were engaged by the Massachusetts
2 CONT Magistrates for the first naval task force sent out by any New Englandcolony.
2 CONT The French had fortified a couple of outposts and from these footholds,they
2 CONT raided Penobscot, carrying off 300 weight of beaver skins belonging to the
2 CONT Plymouth colony, and they also captured and robbed an English seacaptain, Dixy
2 CONT Bull. To add to the troubles, Bull having been stripped of his cargo,turned
2 CONT pirate and was preying upon Massachusetts fishing and shipping.  Capt.Gallop's
2 CONT ship manned with 20 volunteers under the command of his friend, JohnMason, was
2 CONT dispatched to police these predations. Head winds and a blizzard forcedCapt.
2 CONT Gallop to take refuge in Cape Ann Harbor; here he was storm-bound twoweeks,
2 CONT returning to Boston on Jan 2. When Spring came, he sailed forth again,but he
2 CONT failed to find his quarry, for Bull had sailed south to Virginia. TheGeneral
2 CONT Court of Massachusetts voted &10 each to Gallup and Mason "to pay for any
2 CONT expenditures."

2 CONT In 1635, John Gallop was engaged to transport the Cogswell family fromMaine.
2 CONT John Cogswell had embarked from Bristol, England, on May 23, 1635; thepassage
2 CONT was long and disastrous; those on board were washed ashore from the broken
2 CONT decks of their wrecked ship Angel Gabriel, at Pemaquid (now Bristol,Maine).
2 CONT John Cogswell and his family were spared their lives. Fortunately, theyhad
2 CONT salvaged a large tent which was pitched upon the beach and sheltered themuntil
2 CONT help arrived.  At his first opportunity John Cogswell took passage forBoston,
2 CONT where he engaged Capt. Gallup, who commanded a small bark, to sail toPemaquid
2 CONT and transport the Cogswell family to Ipswich, Mass. Bay Colony. (HAF)

2 CONT In the spring of 1636, John Gallup, bent on a spring trading cruise, castoff
2 CONT from his wharf in Boston Harbor in his sloop with his son William  and ahired
2 CONT man as crew.  Having rounded Cape Cod he laid a course by dead reckoningfor
2 CONT Saybrook point.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Off Block Island they sighted a small ship anchored in a broad cove close
2 CONT inshore. She appeared to be deserted; there was no watch on deck. Herrigging
2 CONT was loose and her gaff swung wildly to and fro as she rocked in thechoppy sea.

2 CONT Gallop hove to and on approaching recognized a pinnace of John Oldham, a
2 CONT coastwise trader; on deck there was a score of Indians lying asleep.  Hehailed
2 CONT and a couple of Indians jumped into a heavily laden  canoe lashedalongside and
2 CONT paddled rapidly for the shore.  There was great confusion aboard thepinnace,
2 CONT but the natives succeeded in slipping the cable and standing off beforethe
2 CONT wind headed for Narragansett Bay.

2 CONT Convinced that Oldham was in trouble, Gallop haulded up alongside and was
2 CONT greeted with a shower of spears an arrows and a volley from severalmuskets.
2 CONT His sons opened fire with two great duck guns mounted on swivels--no mean
2 CONT armament--and the savages took refuge below deck. The odds were too greatto
2 CONT risk boarding so Gallop put up his helm and beat to windward, then comingabout
2 CONT bore down on the pinnace before the wind.  The 20 ton sloop rammed thesmaller
2 CONT vessel with such force that she heeled over on her beam end and waterpoured
2 CONT down the hatchway.  Panic stricken, the Indians scrambled on deck; several
2 CONT leaped overboard and were drowned; the others hid in the hold. Gallupwithdrew
2 CONT to repeat his ramming maneuvre.

2 CONT He had the sudden inspiration to make the blow more devastating bylashing his
2 CONT anchor to the bow, its sharp flukes pointing outward, thus improvising an
2 CONT iron-clad ram two centuries before naval architects adopted this idea. The
2 CONT pinnace was now virtually adrift, falling off to leeward, and when thesloop
2 CONT again crashed into her windward quarter the flukes of an anchor-rampenetrated
2 CONT the hull.  The two ships were clamped fast together.

2 CONT night correcting some of the data from her reading of the Cross Creek
2 CONT cemetery records.  I'm showing them below.

2 CONT Judging from the cemetery records and census data, I think that thisThomas
2 CONT is most likely the son of Isabel Beatty and William Beatty.

2 CONT In my searching through Harrison Co., OH records, I have found dates where
2 CONT William was purchasing land as early as 1820 in Harrison Co., OH, but Iwas
2 CONT somewhat confused thinking that he was living in Harrison County by 1820,
2 CONT but his wife died in Washington Co., PA in 1832.  Comparing the Washington
2 CONT Co. PA census to the Harrison Co., OH census data I have determined the
2 CONT William was physically living in PA until *after* 1832.  By the 1840census
2 CONT he had moved over to Harrison County.
2 CONT 
2 CONT I also found that James and Jane (maiden name unknown) Beatty lived in
2 CONT Harrison Co., and died there being buried in the Cadiz cemetery.
2 CONT Interestingly though, there were tombstone memorials in the Cross Creek
2 CONT Church, Washington Co., PA cemetery for them also.  This ties James and
2 CONT Jane to Washington Co., PA.  Could James be the brother to William?Thomas
2 CONT Beatty lists both William and James as sons in his will which was probated
2 CONT in 1816.
2 CONT

2 CONT I went to Philadelphia today and looked at U.S. Census records for
2 CONT Washington Co., PA.  This is what I came up with:

2 CONT It is believed that the Kiser family is German in origin and that thename came from the Germa
2 CONC n "Kaiser" (middle high German Keiser, old highGerman Keisar, from the Latin imperial title C
2 CONC aesar, which originallyitself was a family name. There has been several spellings of the fami
2 CONC lyname; i.e., Kaiser, Kayser, Keiser, Kiser, etc. The most common in thisfamily line is Kiser
2 CONC , which is probably a derivative of Kaiser. It is notknown when the "a" was dropped from Kais
2 CONC er.
2 CONT  The accepted progenitor of the Kiser Family in America is Peter Kiserwho married Mary Margre
2 CONC tha Straus and were the parents of elevenchildren. Some researchers believe that Peter was th
2 CONC e son of ValentineKiser who moved from Northampton County to Westmoreland County,Pennsylvania
2 CONC , died and was buried ther on 7 September 1785 (age 75 yr. 11mo.). However, there is no proo
2 CONC f that this Valentine Kiser is the fatherof Peter Kiser.
2 CONT  Peter Kiser was born about 1759 probably in Northampton County,Pennsylvania and he died abou
2 CONC t 1829 probably in Clarion County,Pennsylvania. In about 1785, he married Mary Margretha Stra
2 CONC us, born about1764, died about 1850. Peter and Mary are buried in Lutherin Cemetery inShippen
2 CONC ville, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, where their originaltombstone was still standing in 199
2 CONC 2 along side a new modern tombstone.It is believed that Peter Kiser moved to Clarion County
2 CONC , Pennsylvania in1817 and settled on a farm near Elk City.1

2 CONT with a page cut from a Bible that lists Henry Hoover and two wives - 1st.Mary
2 CONT Say and I have no information on her as I am descended from the 2nd wife- Margaret
2 CONT Kelly. born February 8, 1816 and died Feb. 20, 1857.  She is buried atthe Scrubgrass
2 CONT Presbyterian Church - the old stone church - and has a pointed tombstonewith
2 CONT a hand pointing up, saying "Gone Home".  Henry is not buried there.  Idon't
2 CONT have a birth date on him or a death date - born fairly early  in the lastcentury
2 CONT and we know he sold his farm in the 1870's.  He had 13 children, Davidbeing
2 CONT the first. Henry purchased some land from and David Say who I thoughtmight
2 CONT have been Mary's father.
2 CONT     I was never able to find Henry's grave.  As I said, he sold the farmin
2 CONT the 1870's.  The next thing we know is that the youngest son - ArchibaldAdair
2 CONT Hoover returned to Venango Co. with his wife Priscilla Chillcot andsettled
2 CONT near Polk.  The Hoovers have been around Franklin ever since. PriscillaChilcott
2 CONT was born in Armstrong Co. and my uncles remember going off to ArmstrongCo.
2 CONT in the Apollo area for family reunions when they were children in the30's.
2 CONT  All contact has been lost with those people.  I suppose there's apossibility
2 CONT that Henry was buried there - although it seems strange that he wouldsell up
2 CONT and leave when he was in his 70's.  We may never know.
2 CONT     Back to Mary Say - The Venango Co. Historical Society is in theprocess
2 CONT of copying all cemetery records in the county.  They claim that "MaryHoover,
2 CONT d. Apr. 20, 1836, 36 y., wife of Henry" is buried on the Morrison Lot andtherefore
2 CONT assumed she was a Morrison.  My Bible page definitely says Mary Say.  Soshe
2 CONT may have had some connection with the Morrisons.  This is at ScrubgrassPresby.
2 CONT Church. David's brothers - Samuel, Silas and James. James was born in1833 and
2 CONT the next child I have listed is Rachael, born in 1840 - obviously by hissecond
2 CONT wife, Margaret.  The 4 brothers would have all been about the right agesto
2 CONT fight in the Civil War.

2 CONT James, the youngest son of William and Margaret Dunlap, was born in1793
2 CONT Westmoreland County, PA., and lived there until he was forty-six years ofage,
2 CONT then he moved to Butler County, in the same State, continuing there untilhis
2 CONT death, in 1864. His life occupation  was agriculture. He married Mary VanDyke,
2 CONT 25  Dec 1822.  They may have been the parents of twelve children,I onlyhave
2 CONT information on seven of the children. William Dunlap, was a native ofIreland,
2 CONT and was born near the city of  Londonderry in the year 1740, and came tothis
2 CONT country in 1766, when he established the old Dunlap homestead inPennsylvania.
2 CONT He  married Margaret McAllister in 1766, place unknown. William was thefather
2 CONT of nine children, most of whom settled in Pennsylvania, and are theprogenitors
2 CONT of the Dunlap family in this country, members of which have migrated toalmost
